Challenge Your Concept of Religion

I've always struggled with religion (as I’m sure most people have at least at some point!). All I know for sure is, we ought to do our best to be the best versions of ourselves and try to make the most of this life.
There’s a certain element of sacrifice in continually working towards godliness. And I really struggled on that sentence, because it’s an odd concept and I struggle most with the concept of a creator.
Godliness to me is the absence of envy, the absence of greed, the absence of wrath. You get the picture I’m sure. And we are humans, we cannot be completely without these human elements. But striving for godliness to me is not allowing these things to have a grip on your life. It’s not a sacrifice in that “You have to obey these rules”. It’s a sacrifice in a way that is “Here is the path to a happier more fulfilling life. You are free to choose it, even though it may not be the easy way.”
My husband and his family are Catholic. Peter will be raised in the Catholic faith, and always allowed to have open discussion and his own opinions. I have been a part of the family for about 7.5 years now and have since seen a very different side to faith. I’ve seen love, compassion, enthusiasm, dedication, integrity. This is a stark contrast from my previous experiences of fear and shame being the focus. You have the ultimate power to choose your path, choose your companions, choose your life. Don’t let anyone ever tell you different.
